Highland Day Camp Staff

Highland Day Camp Staff

Highland Day Camp Staff

Our Day Camp Staff are so very important in providing a fun, caring, and energy-filled environment where our campers can experience the love of Christ in an outdoor, adventurous setting.

Positions Available for HDC Summer Staff

1. Camp Counselor: Lead a group of campers through a week of camp. Counselors serve a group of up to 10 campers alongside a co-counselor and are responsible for investing in campers, sharing life with them, and providing them with an incredible, amazing, and unforgettable camp experience! Applicants for this position should be rising 11th grade - college. Rising 10th graders who have served previously as junior counselors are also eligible for this position.

2. Junior Camp Counselors: We are looking for a few juniors counselors to volunteer at camp for 1-2 weeks out of the summer. Junior counselors should be rising 8th, 9th, or 10 graders and also must be a camper enrolled at our overnight camp. There is a separate application for junior counselors.  Click HERE for the application and HERE for the reference forms. You will need to provide us with 3 references from pastors, Bible Study leaders, teachers, mentors, etc.

3. Adventure Staff/Lifeguards: These staff members will be responsible for setting up and overseeing high ropes and water activities as well as maintenance duties and general camp operation.

4. Photographer/Videographer/Technical: Campers love to have GREAT pictures of themselves to show their parents at the end of the week!  If you are a gifted photographer, please apply to take on the challenge of documenting the summer through images, compiling them every week, assembling slideshows, shooting video every now and then, and generally being our imaging technical guru.

5. Worship Leader/Band - There are few things in the world cooler than great worship in an outdoor setting.  We do not simply look for people with musical talent that can tolerate kids and the bear the outdoors; we look for people who genuinely love Jesus and kids and happen to have musical talent. Historically, our worship leaders have also been camp counselors with a desire to lead others in worship. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please let us know in your application!

How to Apply

The application process involves 2 steps: the online application and the interview.

  1. The online application: It takes a while to complete, so give yourself about an hour. Make sure to provide at least 3 references. References should be small group leaders, youth pastors, teachers, and/or employers - not peers or family members.
  2. Interview: After you submit the online application, we'll contact you to schedule an interview. We prefer this to be in person, but can do it over the phone if necessary.

The link to the summer staff application is below. You do not have to complete the application all in one sitting as the system allows you to save your progress along the way. Please email aria@camphighland.com with any questions. We look forward to serving together this summer!

Day Camp Staff FAQ

Day Camp Staff FAQ

Work Schedule

  • What are the hours?

Each day starts early at 7:25 am. You'll drop off your phone first thing and dive into TAG time (Time Alone with God) until about 8:00am. Our team will meet to pray for the day and then move onward to prepare for the day. The work day typically ends around 4:15 pm after we've all worked together to clean up! Everybody. Everywhere. Fridays are our late day;  we'll have a short staff meeting after clean up, so make plans to stay until 4:30 or 5:00 on Fridays.

  • Do I need to work every week?

It's really best if you're available to work at least 6 of the 8 weeks of camp. We understand that you may have a family trip, mission/ church trip, or even a week of Camp Highland in Ellijay. If you think you'll need to miss more than 2 weeks but really have a heart for Highland Day Camp, please go ahead and apply and we can discuss the details in your interview. However, when you commit to working a week, you must be able to work the entire week Monday through Friday without leaving early any of the days.

  • What if I have a doctor's appointment or conflict and need to leave for a portion of the day?

Please schedule all appointments outside of the work hours. In order to invest in kids and build relationships, we are depending on you to be there for the entire day.  If you have something you absolutely cannot miss, you must discuss this with us at the beginning of the summer before staff training starts.

  • What's a typical day like?

A typical day for staff starts at 7:25am with TAG time followed by preparing for the day. Kids arrive at 9:00, and we'll begin in a big group with worship. You and your co-counselor will then split off with your small group of kids and have a short Bible Study. Between 10:00 and 2:30, you'll rotate through the different activities: high ropes, low ropes, adventure games, and slip-n-slides. We'll meet back as a big group at 2:30 and finish each day as a large group. Kids leave at 3:00.  We'll clean up as a team, and the end the work day at about 4:15 pm except for Fridays, when we stay until 4:30 or 5:00.

Staff Training

  • When does staff training start?

We are planning a CPR/First Aid training to occur before this summer's training, dates TBD. We'll have a staff retreat in Ellijay at the overnight Camp Highland site. We'll also have staff training at Bridgeway Christian Academy May 27-29.

  • What if I can't make it to staff training?

    Staff training is mandatory.
  • Do I need to know how to belay and harness?

Training for belaying and harnessing will occur during staff training. Those who serve on the ropes courses will be 110% confident that they are providing a safe and fun experience for all campers!

Other

  • Why should I work at Highland Day Camp?

Our heart and mission is pure and simple - showing kids that God is real and wildly in love with them. At no other job will you get to hang out with friends, play with kids, and grow in your relationship with God. A summer at camp is typically a huge time of growth for our counselors as well as our campers. The other staff that you meet will become your family for the summer and the friendships you'll form will make it the best summer ever!

  • What if I've never worked at a camp before?

The main requirements for Highland Day Camp are that you love Jesus and love kids and that you want to spend your summer sharing the love of Jesus with kids!  If you have previous experience working at other camps, that's great, but if not, that's not a problem! The majority of our staff come to us with this being their first camp counselor job.

  • Can I talk on my phone during the day?

No, summer staff are not allowed phone access during the camp day. All summer staff must either leave their phones in their cars or turn in their phones at the beginning of the day. Phones can be picked up at the end of the day before leaving to go home. Your parents will be able to contact the camp director should the need arise.

  • What’s the application process, and when do I find out if I got the job?

We have a rolling application process, so there is no hard deadline; and we'll keep accepting applications until all the positions are filled. The best plan is to apply early!

The first step is to fill out the online application; please be sure to list at least three references and their email addresses. Once you submit your application, reference forms will automatically be emailed to your references. After we have replies from at least three references, we'll contact you to schedule an interview. We'll work around your schedule to plan the best time for an interview. We'll contact you shortly after your interview to let you know your status.

  • How many staff members do you hire, and how many campers come through during the summer?

We'll hire about 15 female counselors and 15 male counselors plus a couple of lifeguards, a couple of photographers, one videographer, and a few adventure team members. In a typical week, we'll have between 120 - 130 campers.

  • Will I work with the same age group all summer?

At day camp we have rising K - rising 5th graders, and we want to put you with the age group you work best with and where you'll enjoy being.  You will have the opportunity to work with different age groups. In some cases, counselors change age groups every week, and in other cases counselors remain with the same age group for the majority of the summer.  Please let us know if there is a certain age group you feel that you work best with, and we'll do our best to honor your request. We want the summer to be the best possible experience for you!

  • Can I request a co-counselor?

You can definitely request a co-counselor, although we can't make any promises. Many factors go into counselor and group assignments, but we definitely want it to be a really awesome experience for you! Please let us know any concerns you may have with your group placement.

  • Will there be a staff Bible Study?

Yes, we'll have a staff Bible Study on Tuesday mornings, starting at 7:25 like usual.
