Highland Day Camp Staff

Highland Day Camp Staff

Highland Day Camp Staff

Our Day Camp Staff are so very important in providing a fun, caring, and energy-filled environment where our campers can experience the love of Christ in an outdoor, adventurous setting.

Positions Available for Summer 2017

1. Camp Counselor: Lead a group of campers through a week of camp. Counselors are in a group with up to 10 campers and another counselor and are responsible for investing in campers, sharing your life with them, and providing them with an incredible camp experience. Counselors should be rising 11th graders in high school and go through college-age. Rising 10th graders who have been previous junior counselors are also eligible for this position.

2. Jr. Counselors - We are looking for a few juniors counselors to volunteer at camp for 1-2 weeks out of the summer. Junior counselors should be rising 8th, 9th, or 10 graders and also must be a camper enrolled at our overnight camp. There is a separate application for junior counselors.  Click HERE for the application, and HERE for the reference forms (you will need to provide us with 3 references from pastors, Bible Study leaders, teachers, mentors, etc). Please email lauren@camphighland.com with questions.

3. Adventure Staff/Lifeguards: These staff members will be responsible for setting up and overseeing high ropes and water activities as well as maintenance duties and general camp operation.

4. Photographer/Videographer/Technical: Campers love to have GREAT pictures of themselves to show their parents at the end of the week!  If you are a gifted photographer, you can apply to take on the challenge of documenting the summer through images, compiling them every week, assembling slideshows, shooting video every now and then, and generally being our imaging technical guru.

5. Worship Leader/Band - There are few things in the world cooler than great worship in an outdoors setting.  We do not simply look for people with musical talent that can tolerate kids and the bear the outdoors; we look for people who genuinely love Jesus and kids, and happen to have musical talent. Historically, our worship leaders have always been counselors with a desire to lead others in worship. If this sounds good to you, please let us know!

How to Apply

The application process involves 2 steps: the online application and the interview.

  1. The online application: It takes a while to complete, so give yourself about an hour. Make sure to provide at least 3 references. References should be small group leaders, youth pastors, teachers, and employers (not friends or family members).
  2. Interview: After you submit the online application, we'll contact you to schedule an interview. We prefer this to be in person, but can do it over the phone without a problem!

The link to the summer staff application is below. You do not have to complete the application all in one sitting, as the system allows you to save your progress along the way.

Day Camp Staff FAQ

Day Camp Staff FAQ

Work Schedule

  • What are the hours?

Each day starts early at 7:25 am. Counselors drop off their phones and dive into TAG time/quiet time until 8:00am. Our team will meet to pray for the day and move onward to prepare for the day.  The work day ends around 4:15 pm after we've all worked together to clean up. The only exception is Friday when we'll have a staff meeting afterwards so make plans to stay until 4:30/5:00 on Fridays.

  • Do I need to work every week?

It's really best if you're able to work the entire summer; although, we understand that you may have a family trip, mission/church trip, or even a week of Camp Highland in Ellijay. We allow you to miss 2 weeks. If you think you'll need to miss more, still apply, and we can discuss this more in your interview. When you commit to working a week, you must be able to work the entire week Monday through Friday without leaving early on any of the days.

  • What if I have a doctor's appointment or conflict and need to leave for a portion of the day?

Please schedule all appointments outside of the work hours. In order to invest in kids and build relationships, we are depending on you to be there for the entire day.  If you have something you absolutely cannot miss, you must discuss this with us at the beginning of the summer before staff training starts.

  • What's a typical day like?

A typical day for staff starts at 7:25am with quiet time followed by preparing for the day. Kids arrive at 9:00, and we'll begin in a big group with worship and awards. After worship, you and your co-counselor will split off with your group of kids and have a short Bible Study. Between 10:00 and 2:30, you'll rotate through the different activities (1-2 high ropes, a few low ropes, adventure games, slip-n-slides). We'll meet back as a big group at 2:30 and finish each day with more worship. Kids leave at 3:00 then we'll clean up and meet, and the day ends at about 4:00 pm.

Staff Training

  • When does staff training start?

We are planning a CPR/First Aid training to occur before this summer's training. We will leave Sunday, May 29th for a short staff retreat in Ellijay at the overnight Camp Highland site and will return Tuesday evening to the Alpharetta area. We'll have training at Bridgeway Christian Academy on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

  • What if I can't make it to staff training?

Staff training is mandatory.  If you have conflicts, don't let that stop you from applying because it may be possible to work around your schedule.

  • Do I need to know how to belay and harness?

We will train you on all of the high and low elements during staff training week so previous knowledge on belaying and harnessing is not needed. We'll go through it over and over again during training week so you'll be more than prepared before the first day of camp.

Others

  • Why should I work at Highland Day Camp?

Our heart and mission is pure and simple - to help kids see Jesus, and there is nothing more important than showing kids that God is real and wildly in love with them. No other job will you get to hang out with friends, play with kids, and grow in your relationship with God. A summer at camp is a huge time of growth for you as well as helping kids to grow. The other staff that you meet will become your family for the summer, and the friendships you'll form will make it the best summer!

  • What if I've never worked at a camp before?

The main requirements for Highland Day Camp are that you love Jesus and love kids and want to spend your summer giving the love of Christ away to kids. If you have previous experience working at other camps, that's great, but if not, that's not a problem! The majority of our staff probably come to us with this being their first counselor/camp job.

  • Can I talk on my phone during the day?

No, summer staff are not allowed phone access during the camp day. All summer staff must either leave their phones in their cars or turn in their phones at the beginning of the day. Phones can be picked up at the end of the day before leaving to go home.

  • What’s the application process, and when do I find out if I got the job?

We have a rolling application process so there is no hard deadline, and we'll keep accepting applications until all the positions are filled.  The best plan is to apply early!

The first step is to fill out the online application, and be sure to list at least three references and their email addresses.  Once you submit your application, reference forms will automatically be emailed to your references. After we have at least 3 references, we'll contact you to schedule an interview. We'll work around your schedule to plan the best time for an interview. We'll contact you shortly after your interview to let you know your status.

  • How many staff members do you hire, and how many campers come through during the summer?

We'll hire about 15 girl counselors and 15 boy counselors plus a couple lifeguards, a couple photographers, one videographer, and a few adventure team members (A-team are responsible for setting up and taking down the high elements each day and for helping out where needed.) In a typical week, we'll have between 120 - 130 campers.

  • Will I work with the same age group all summer?

At day camp, we have rising K - rising 5th graders, and we want to put you with the age group you work best with and where you'll enjoy being.  You will have the opportunity to work with different age groups. In some cases, counselors change age groups every week, and in other cases, counselors remain with the same age group for the majority of the summer.  Please let us know if there is a certain age group you feel that you work best with, and we'll do our best to honor your request. We want the summer to be the best possible experience for you so we want to place you with the age group you're most comfortable with.

  • Can I request a co-counselor?

You can definitely request a co-counselor; although, we can't make any promises. Many factors go into counselor and group assignments, but we definitely want it to be a really awesome experience for you so please let us know any concerns you may have with your group placement.

  • Will there be a staff Bible Study?

Yes, we'll have a staff Bible Study on Tuesday mornings (same time 7:30 am). We'll pass out Bible study books during staff training week.
